Krishna Menon Memorial Government Women’s College, named after the late V.K. Krishna Menon, the pride of Malabar and an illustrious son of the country is a realization of a long-cherished dream, vision and hard work of the self-less and service minded citizens of Kannur. It is one of the most prestigious institutions of higher education in North Malabar exclusively for girls.

The college started functioning as a junior college affiliated to Calicut University in 1975.The College was formally inaugurated on 16th August 1975 by Sri. Chakkeeri Ahamed Kutty, the then Honourable Minister for Education in a building near Government High School for Girls at Payyambalam. Thanks to Krishna Menon Memorial Government Women’s College Vikasana Samithi, 15 acres of land was acquired by the government of Kerala in the jail compound at Pallikkunnu in the National Highway on 9.11.1978 to construct a new building for the college.

Provisional affiliation was granted by the University of Calicut for the commencement of the following subjects for pre-degree:

(a)  Indian History, World History, and Economics

(b)  Indian History, World History and English

(c)  Indian History, World History and Hindi

(d)  Indian History, World History and Malayalam

In 1980, degree classes were inaugurated by Sri. Baby John, the then Honourable Minister for Education. The college was shifted from its temporary premises to the permanent site at Pallikkunnu on 14-2-1983.The college in the new site was formally inaugurated by Sri. T.M Jacob, the then Honourable  Minister for Education. The bungalow of the Jail Superintendent was remodelled to house the classes and administrative office. The Vikasana Samithi which saw to the construction of five lecture halls and donated them to the college was mainly instrumental in the shifting of the college to its permanent site. The lecture halls were handed over by Sri. E. Ahamed, the then Honourable Minister for Industries. The foundation stone of the new building was laid on 11-3-1989 by Sri. K.Chandrashekaran, the late Honourable Minister for Education on 4-8-1990. He inaugurated the temporary college auditorium partly constructed by the College Vikasana Samithi and completed by the government. Thanks to the keen interest taken by the Parent-Teacher Association, the construction of one of the three blocks was completed in 1992.The remaining two blocks were completed in 1997. The new building was formally taken over by the college on 1.7.1997. The college office and a few departments are now functioning in the newly constructed block.
